DUBING his short; stay here the late Roads Engineer, Mr. C. Coane, (now at Goulburn), made himself very popular with the men under his supervision. As a mark of their appreciation of his conduct to them, they have presented him, through Mr Kirwan (his successor), with a handsome gold chain and pendant, suitably inscribed, accompanied by the following address :

To CHARLES COANE, Esquire, A M I C E L S. Resident Engineer for Roads and Bridges, Richmond, N S W, 1st November. 1894. Dear sir,-We, the undersigned, who have had the honor and pleasure of being employed under your able supervision as maintenance men on the roads & bridges in your charge during your tenure of office in this district, desire to place on record both our regret at your departure from us and the gratification we feel that you go to a well earned promotion in the service. To your unchanging kindness to us and your unswerving attention to the onerous dudes of your honorable position do we hereby bear heart felt testimony. We hope that you will accept the accompanying souvenir as emblematic of the bond wherewith you are linked to our memories by your ever genial, kindly bearing towards as one and all. In wealth of words we revel not ; but let us in conclusion wish with all our hearts that throughout life you may bridge over all difficulties and make smooth and pleasant to travel your road of life with that never failing measure of success which has invariably attended on your labors in the Hawkesbury district. The following reply has been received from Mr. Coane : Roads Office, Goulburn, December 10th, 1894 My dear Mr. Kirwan,-Would you kindly convey to Mr David Robertson and all the other maintenance men in the Rich- mond district my sincere feeling of gratification and thanks for the highly flattering address and very handsome present which you bave kindly forwarded me on their behalf, It is deeply gratifying to know that whilst carrying out to the best of my ability, those duties entrusted to me, I have earned the esteem and kindly wishes of those whose work it was my province to supervise. I have to thank the men for their cordial co-operation on all occasions, and the cheerful and ready obedience with which all my instructions were promptly executed, we trust for the public good. Their gift I shall cherish as the most valued ana pleasing momento of my short stay in the Hawkesbury district. I entirely reciprocate all those kindly feelings so generously expressed in the address, and trust that the lives of each and all of those wishing me and mine so well may ever be blessed with health, happiness and increasing prosperity.-Yours very sincerely, CHARLES CROANE,

The death occurred at Keppel House, Bathurst, yesterday, of Mr. Chas. Coane, at the age of 58 years. The deceased, who was an engineer of the Works Department, had been connected with the Bathurst office for some months. He had been unwell for the last half-year, and a few days ago contracted a severe attack of pleurisy, to which he succumbed. The late Mr. Coane was of a quiet, unassuming dis- position, and was much esteemed by all who knew him. To his three bereaved daughters, much sympathy will be extended. The remains will be interred in the Church of England portion of the Bathurst Cemetery, this afternoon, the funeral starting from Keppel House at 2.30.

OBITUARY.

MR. CHARLES COANE,

 The death occurred at Keppel House," Keppel-street, yesterday at noon of Mr. Charles Coane, at the age of 58 years. The deceased, who was born in Ballyshannon, Donegal (Ireland), came to New South Wales about 40 years ago. He had been in the Public Works Department for about 25 of 30 years, during which time he was stationed at Hay, Wentworth, and Balranald. He, had been district engineer at Bathurst for six months. Three daughter's remain.
