    Biography

Charles Cheney II was born on August 30, 1703, in Anne Arundel, Maryland, to Charles Cheney and Ann Jones. He married Mary Powell, daughter of John and Mary Powell,[1] on April 13, 1721[2], in his hometown. Records also show a marriage between a Charles Cheney and Elizabeth Green on November 12, 1723.[3] He was a farmer and land owner and died on March 7, 1781, in Frederick, Maryland,
    Controversey regarding wives and children

Charles may have been married and had children with two separate women simultaneously.

"Charles Cheney, Jr., 'born and (sic) 20 Sept. 20, 1703, bapt. ... son of Charles and Anne Cheney' [AHPR p. 63]; d. testate March 7, 1781 [ref. the late Mrs. Edward H. Minard of Washington, D.C.] Washington County, Md.

"As this is the only Charles Cheney of this era, other than his father, we are greatly confused by the All Hallow's and Queen Ann's Parish Register Entries which appear to pertain to him. They show that he apparently had two wives, i.e. "Charles Cheney married Mary Powell 13 April 1721", and "Charles Cheney married Elizabeth Green 12 Nov. 1723." There is nothing unusual about these, but there are then at least 10 children, and these are shown alternately as either issue of Mary or Elizabeth -- seeming to indicate that both wives were living at the same time! One might conclude that we had two men mixed up and these were actually two families, but the will of this Charles (infra) names all of the children thus listed in the registers (except Charles and Ezekiel who may have predeceased their father), in addition to others not listed in the registers. All we can do therefore is list these children as we found them."[4]

This source goes on to list the following seven children: Charles, Jacob, Dorcas, Ezekiel, Mary, Rachel and Jeremiah.
