He attended Princeton, then studied medicine in Philadelphia before moving to Belleville, Ohio. He later moved to Louisiana where he practiced medicine and rented a sugar farm. He then returned to New Jersey, but finally settled in Wellington, Ohio, where he appears on the 1850 Census. He eventually moved west to Iowa, but spent a year with the family of daughter Caroline (Beach) Ridenour tending her sick daughter. He returned to Farragut, Iowa, where he died in 1888, with his remains returned to Ohio for burial beside his wife.
