Descendent of Pioneer Stock is Thrombosis Victim Sunday; Funeral Services Will Be Held Wednesday Afternoon
Friends and relatives in Sycamore were shocked on Sunday afternoon at the passing of Nathan Chandler Calhoun at the home of Mrs. Fannie Arnold on Somonauk street. Mr. Calhoun had been apparently in his usual health, his sudden death caused by an attack of thrombosis that day.
Nathan Chandler Calhoun, son of pioneer settlers of Mayfield township, Abner and Betsey Renwick Calhoun, was born on the parental home farm November 12, 1865. He received his early education in the schools of that community, later taking up the occupation of farming.
Married in 1892
He was married to Miss Harriet Arnold, daughter of William and Carrie Freeman Arnold, on April 21, 1892, the couple being engaged in farming for several years in this vicinity. When they retired from the activity of farm life, Mr. and Mrs. Calhoun went to California, where they resided for two years. For the past five years they have made their home with Mrs. Calhoun's stepmother, Mrs. Fannie Arnold in this city.
Turn to Page Five
Mr. Calhoun was a descendent of sturdy pioneer stock, his father a native of New York state and his mother born in Scotland in the year 1830, coming to America at the age of five years. His inheritance of character was manifest in those kindly and tolerant traits of his rugged ancesters (sic) admired by his friends, and for which his presence will be much missed by loved ones.
He is survived by his wife, and one son, Harry Calhoun of Albuquerque, N. Mex., who arrived in Sycamore this Tuesday to attend the funeral service, and three grandchildren. One of a family of 11 children, there are still living to mourn their brother, two sisters, Mrs. Janet Keast of DeKalb, and Mrs. Lizzie Collet of Lockport and one brother, Dudley, living in Minnesota.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock at the Emil E. Johnson chapel, Rev. Charles H. Draper officiating. Interment will following (sic) in the family lot in beautiful Ohio Grove cemetery.
