Chandler Bates was born at Southampton in 1786. In early life he cherished a strong desire to obtain a liberal education and become a preacher of the gospel, and he earned by his own personal efforts the means of defraying the expense of his education. He entered college at the age of twenty-eight. He studied theology with the Rev. Joel T. Benedict of Chatham, N.Y., and was licensed in 1821. He was first settled in Newfane, Vt., and continued there ten years. He then removed to Gaines's Mills, N.Y., where he remained about three years. He then removed to Parma Centre, where he resided till his death in 1857, at the age of seventy two. He left a widow and two sons.
