Mrs. Catherine E. Herthel, widow of Samuel Herthel, died at 7 o'clock Sunday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Bass, in Union township. Death was caused from a complication of diseases and followed a short illness. Her health had not been good for several years but she had only been seriously ill for the past few days.

The deceased was widely known in this city and county. She was born in Marion township January 3, 1851, being eighty years old at the time of death. Her parents were Peter and Mary Yarling, natives of Germany, who came to the United States in 1829 and settled in Shelby County in 1836. Mrs. Herthel was the youngest of nine children, only one of whom survives. She was married on November 18, 1874 to Samuel Herthel whose death occurred in January 1917. Four children were born to this union, three of whom survive.

Mrs. Herthel was a devoted and faithful member of the First Methodist Episcopal church. She resided in Marion township until about twenty years ago when she and her husband moved to Shelbyville.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. John Bass, of Union township; two sons Henry Herthel, of Morristown and Harry Herthel, of Marion township, and one brother Michael Yarling, of this city. A daughter, May Herthel, died a number of years ago. Four grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive. There are a number of nieces and nephews surviving.

The body was brought this afternoon to the late home, 31 East South street, in this city. Funeral services will be conducted there at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with Dr. L. T. Freeland, pastor of the M. E. church, officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Forest Hill cemetery in charge of Morris H. Sleeth. Friends may call at the home at any time.
