KILLED BY LIGHTNING
Mrs. Sam Hatfield Struck and Killed By Lightning While in Garden Last Wednesday Afternoon
Mrs. Sam Hatfield, 51 years of age, who lived in the Lowground near the county line, was killed instantly last Wednesday afternoon when struck by a bolt of lightning. She was out in the garden, which is clear of trees and wires, about 70 feet from the house, and had been setting the plants out when struck, as the bolt first struck the back of her head, burning the hair from that place, and then without injuring her body, jumped to her knees.
The accident happened shortly after three o'clock and the body was found in a short time by Wiford Dole's two little boys and Rollie Lewi's boy who had been fishing. They ran to the barn immediately and notified Mr. Hatfield, who had just come in from the field.
The lightning appeared to be from a light cloud passing over, and it was not storming here at that time of the afternoon, although the sky was very threatening, but an electrical storm visited here around six o'clock.
Mrs. Hatfield was very well known through the east end of the county and was highly respected by all and well thought of. Besides her husband, she is survived by two children.
Cassie Ann Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Miller, was born January 18, 1880, and departed this life April 15, 1931, at the age of 51 years, 2 months and 28 days.
She was united in marriage to Sam Hatfield, February 18, 1897. To this union were born three children; Alpha, the eldest, dying in infancy, Mrs. Bertie Partin of the Lowground vicinity; and Neal Hatfield of the Green Grove vicinity, survive.
Besides her husband and two children, she leaves to mourn her departure, her aged father, three brothers and two sisters, namely; Mrs. Ellen Wade, Worthington; Mrs. R. D. Lawson, Queen City; George, Greenton; Fred, Stahl; Clem, Queen City; and a number of more distant relatives and a host of friends.
Her mother preceded her in death June 4, 1926.
She united with the Church of Christ in 1898, later changing her membership to the Free Will Baptist church and remaining in that faith until death.
She was a kind wife and mother, and will be greatly missed in the home and community.
Funeral services were conducted at the Green Grove church Friday afternoon, April 17, by Rev. A. M. Wiles of Macon, Mo.
Burial at the Green Grove cemetery.
