The author visited Carolyn in September, 2000. She is still living in the red brick "John Harvey House" just west of the village of Aroma, Indiana. The house has a stately look to it, at the end of a long gravel drive. There were many Harvey artifacts displayed in the house, including: dental tools, awards (pins) for the most bushels per acre and a black powder hunting rifle.

The story was told of a dark night when John Harvey heard noise of a struggle by the smoke house. Upon investigating, he discovered a would be thief stuck fast under the smokehouse foundation. The thief was given a stern sermon, a ham, and released to consider his actions and future. She also shared that John & Malinda occasionally sheltered slaves on there way North. Carolyn was the gracious host and very interesting to get to know.
The following story was recounted in our interview: " Used to be one (Quaker Meeting), down on this farm, and when you cross the bridge here in Aroma, there used to be a road that went right along the creek. And one time we were away back in the fields rounding up cows and counting the little calves. They went clear to the east fence and Gerald said, 'See that little road that comes up there? That used to come all along on this side of Duck creek and (there was a Monthly Meeting down there).' " When the congregation voted to go Methodist Episcopal rather than Friends (by one vote), John Harvey & Jehiel Williams chose to have their Meetings in their own homes. The Harveys, Haworths, Johnsons, and Williams were Friends.
Carolyn reports that her great great grandfather's grave is now within the Airport Authority property for Indianapolis.
"Mom, Melina and I attended the funeral today. The church was full and the service was short but nice. Jim had done the flowers on the casket which were beautiful. He also used one of her quilts and a milk (butter) churn. I sat with Mom and Linda (Fox) in the back and watched all the Johnsons and Haworths say goodbye to this amazing woman. Mom said carolyn would have loved today... a sunny day in June, all her family and "her" church."

As reported by Jill (Woodsides) Swenson.
