Sept. 10, 1852, Vol. XL No. 8, pg. 2, col. 3: "On Saturday evening some three weeks since, just before engaging in family worship, Mr. Calvin Couch, of Montgomery, sat down on the floor to fill a camphene lamp - the lamp stood on the floor beside him, and the wicks were ignorantly or carelessly left burning. The lamp exploded, the burning camphene flew over him, and his clothes being of cotton material, were instantly on fire, and he was soon enveloped by the flames. In agony or in fright, he ran out in the open air, and before the flames could be extinguished, he was burned in a shocking manner. He died on Tuesday of last week. He was a good citizen, and an industrious and enterprising farmer. Yours & c., B." Calvin was a farmer.
