CALEB s NICKERSON (Caleb4. William3, William2,' William1), born atChatham, Mass. 2 April 1735-6; son of Caleb and Mary (Godfrey) Nickerson;died at Chatham 31 December 1804 and is buried there in Queen ArmeCemetery,

He married 4 May 1758 at Chatham ELIZABETH MAYO, born Chatham or Easthamin 1735; daughter of Judah and Mary (Hamilton) Mayo; died 21 October1806, Chatham.

"April 8 1759. 'A petition of Abner Eldredge and others (includingCaleb) setting forth that on the 10th of July last they were impressedinto His Majesty's service and billeted themselves for 3 weeks beforethey had orders to march and were sent to George's Fort, from whence theyre- turned home the 24th of December following and praving that they maybe allowed for the billeting and that their pay may be equal to the payof other soldiers in the Province Service, received favorable action fromthe General Court. They each received 14 shillings for billeting and 1pound 11 shillings 8 pence for wages." (A) Caleb also served in Capt.Benjamin Godfrey's Co. of Militia called out on alarm at (New) Bedfordand Falmouth in September 1778. In 1792 Caleb served on the committee torepair and improve the meeting house, and signed this report - "It is theopinion of us that the meeting house should be repaired on the outside,the men's and women's stairs taken away and the passage ways stopt; theporch inlarged and raised so as to make stairways up the porch for themen and women. Windows made and others repaired; one seat in the men'sand women's front gallery taken up for the allaway and what room them isin stairways in the gallery each side to be made into seats, as the agentthat the town shall choose to see that business is done shall think mostconvenient for the whole; the outside of the house and windows coloredand pews made where the stairs now stand"

From the inventory of Caleb's estate, appraised 15 March 1805, it that hewas a very active and prosperous business man. It included "9 acres landin Chatham, one-eighth part of Rope Works, 2 acres of beach partlycovered with saltworks, one half of 2800 feet of saltworks, store andmills, one pew in meeting house - Saltworks the other half in dispute whothey belong to - Likewise the salt and salts and lumber under the samepredicament, total real estate $1950. Personal estate - 1000 lbs. saltat 4 cents a lb., 15 hogsheads of home made salt, one half Schooners "Polly" "Leader", and "Rover", 3 Lights of Stock in Rope Works, 30 Bu. ofLiverpool Salt, 10 hogsheads French Salt-Total $3010. John Hawes, SamuelDoane, Jonah Crowell Appraisers".

Caleb's will, dated 15 August 1803, left Elizabeth one third "of all thereal estate I have in Chatham and elsewhere that I have not given away bydeeds to my beloved sons .... daughter Esther three quarters of a meadowlot on Norset Beach.... grandson Joshua, son of Salathiel, one-eighth ofthe rope works and appurtences.... grand-daughter Esther, daughter ofJudah deceased, 1 cow, featherbed and bedstead.... and the privilege ofhouse room so long as she remains single.... John Widderson, son of Johndeceased, who now lives with me .... $50 at age 21 provided he shallcontinue to live with me .... and serve me, but otherwise is to be cutoff......
