    "50 Caleb3 (Griswold), b. Wethersfield, Conn., May 8, 1706 (Michael2, Michael1); m. in Wethersfield, July 30, 1730, Abigail Bunce, daughter of Jonathan and Sarah, bapt. June 6,1708. Abigail was descendant of Ens. Thomas Bunce. Caleb was a ship builder and master; owned sloops Henry and Eliza. Was master of the sloop Defence for a time. The following letter written to Jonathan Law is an interesting acknowledgment of the service.

    Wethersfield, Mar. 21,1748.

    Honnord Sr

    Your Honor was pleased to appoint me master of the Coleny Sloop Defence the year past and I hearing that Shee is fitting for service as usull I should be verry willing to serve in sd post if it be agrable to your Honnor. Hooping I have discharged my Betrustment to the satisfaction of your Honnor but with dew submission to your honnor I take leave to Subscribe mySelf your Honnor's obedient and Humble Servant.
