"28 Caleb Alling, 3d, was a selectman and one of the leading men of Hamden. In 1795 he opened his house for worship on Sundays, and invited all those who sympathized with him to join with them. He thus established a place of worship in his own house and conducted the services many years, and notwithstanding he was imprisoned for refusing to support the Fair Haven church, he continued the ministration of worship until a short time before his death, and his tombstone reads: 'Rev. Caleb Ailing, died Nov. 25th, 1823, in the 78th year of his age and the 26th of his ministry.' He was also a man of military attainments, and was appointed by the Assembly, October 21, 1778, Captain of the 17th Co., 2d Regt, Conn. Militia, and was with his company during the invasion of New Haven by the British, July 5, 1779. The sword he then carried is now in the possession of his descendants in Hamden."
