Boyle Irwin began studies at Dublin College in the classics but was attracted to the US before he graduated. He moved to Pittsburgh and established a commission business in the building located "on the Diamond". He was commissioned to build the rigging for Commodore Perry's fleet but his shop was struck by lightning, set fire, and entirely destroyed. He bored the first salt well opened west of the Allegheny Mts. in 1824, located on 9 Mile Run and continued his property until his death. He served on the Pittsburgh City Council, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh.
