[edit] ChildhoodBizzie Lee Beard was born in Etowah County, Alabama on May 28, 1909 to Charles Pinkney Beard, better known as "Pink" and Beatrice Brown. Where the name Bizzie came from is anyone's guess, but I have suspected that it was not her real name, only a nickname that stuck. Perhaps it was one her mother gave her and she determined to keep it, even though she was without her mother. Beatrice died May 29, 1911. Bizzie had just turned 2. Her father married again to Ada Myrtle Fanchier and had several other children with his second wife, besides raising the step children that came with the marriage. She was very fond of her step-mother and told me that she was treated the same as all the other children. There was James, Georgia, Zelma and Beatrice Haney from the previous marriage of her step-mother Myrtle; her half siblings include, Louie, Frank, John Henry, Bertha and Leonard Beard. The family did quite well financially and she did not want for much.
[edit] Adult YearsShe married Rufus Marion Brock November 13, 1929 in Keener, Alabama. The couple honeymooned in California. Rufus was of the Sand Mountain Brock Family. He was not a willing farmer and went to work in a factory. They produced 7 children, only 6 survived. In 1950 the company was building a new factory in Seymour, Indiana and Rufus accepted a job and moved his family north. The oldest child was 15 years old, and lied about his age to be able to work in Indiana. Bizzie was very family oriented and was a part the lives of all her children. She was a Sunday School teacher at the Calvary Baptist Church, which she was a member of until her death. I remember going to Vacation Bible School at her church in summers when I was small. She was patient and caring to everyone. The photo to the right was taken in 1944. They were still living in Alabama at the time. Bizzie was a wonderful cook. Her home-made biscuits were of the melt in your mouth variety. She was a true southern cook. She also quilted. This was done out of necessity, not decorative purposes. The quilts were for warmth, not show. I own 3 of her quilts, all of which show excessive wear.
