Syracuse Herald-Journal, 25 Oct 1991: WOMAN'S DEATH CALLED MURDER / Newspaper columnist found in her Jefferson County farmhouse / Lorraine-- Investigators are treating the death of a 68-year-old woman who lived alone on a secluded farm.in Southern Jefferson County as a suspected homicide. The body of Beulah Dodge, a widow who wrote a weekly newspaper column about her rural community, was discovered in her home shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday. District Attorney Gary Miles said he would not disclose the cause of death or speculate on a motive. .. Dodge's two-story white farmhouse is situated along county Route 91, about two miles from the hamlet of Pierrepont Manor. She had lived there alone since the death of her husband, Roy, late last year. .. Investigators arrived at the scene shortly before 10 a.m. after a neighbor, Jeanette Cobb, called the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department at 9:20 a.m... A contingent of 25 investigators sealed off the area Thursday morning...No one was in custody as of this morning, according to state police. .. An autopsy was scheduled this morning at Mercy Hospital in Watertown. .."She was such a nice lady," the same neighbor said. "She'd have given anything to anybody." Dodge's familiarity with the area was expressed in her column, "Haights Corners," in the weekly Jefferson County Journal.

Dodge, 75, Lorraine Road, will be Monday at the Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home, Belleville. Belleville-Adora No. 136, Order of the Eastern Star, will conduct a service ... Monday, with the funeral immediately following. The Rev. David S. Rudd, pastor of the Union Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Adams Rural Cemetery. Surviving are two nieces, Diann Dodge, Rome, and Carol Gilligan, Fairfax, Va., and three nephews, David Dodge, Lee Center, Ronald Bush, Orwell, and Terry Bush, Richland. A brother, Norman Bush, died July 21.

Syracuse Herald Journal, 10 Dec 1991: NIECE CHARGED IN WOMAN'S SLAYING / Diann Dodge may have been motivated by inheritance, neighbors say / Nearly every week, Diann Dodge would drive from Rome to the home of her elderly widowed aunt some 60 miles away and take her to Sunday services at Pierrepont Manor Umcn Church. But on a Wednesday evening in late October, investigators say, the devoted niece bludgeoned her 75-year-old aunt to death at her secluded farmhouse in southern Jefferson County. Dodge, 49, a secretary at Griffiss Air Force Base, remained in the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail today, charged with second degree murder in the Oct. 23 slaying of Beulah Dodge. Six days before she was killed, Beulah Dodge changed her will... The estate was valued at nearly a quarter of a milion dollars when Beulah Dodge's husband, Roy, a retired dairy farmer, died on Dec 30,1990. In her new will, Beulah Dodge stipulated that the bulk of her estate be divided five ways, among Diann Dodge, another niece and three nephews. But Roy Dodge intended to leave all but $82,500 to Diann Dodge if his wife died before him, according to his will. .. Her attorney, Anthony LaFache of Utica, said the case against his client is ' extremely circumstantial' "She is zealously maintaining her innocence, and she just wants to get this thing over with "... Diann Dodge surfaced as a suspect early in the investigation, .. Within a day after a friend discovered Beulah Dodge's body ... investigators had determined that whoever killed her knew the woman and had a close relationship with her. Diann Dodge came under suspicion once investigators began to establish alibis for other potential suspects..., Beulah Dodge had written a column about her neighborhood, "Haights Corners," for the weekly Jefferson County Journal. In her final column, which was published the day she was murdered, she noted her niece's visit the Sunday before.
