  • 06 Nov 1915 - enlisted in Montreal for the "duration of the war." He was a student and named his mother, Mrs. Thomas G Boland as his next-of-kin. Assigned to 73rd (Overseas) Battalion, Royal Highlanders of Canada
  • 08 Nov 1915 - medical examination. He was 18 years 2 and 1/2 months old. He stood 5 ' 5 1/2", and had a fair complexion, brown eys and brown hair.
  • 09 Jun 1916 - completed his military will, naming his mother as heir to both real estate and personal estate.
  • 31 Mar 1916 - embarked from Halifax aboard S.S. Adriatic
  • 09 Apr 1916 - arrived in Liverpool, England on the S.S. Adriatic according to the "Casualty Form - Active Service"
  • 12 Aug 1916 - embarked for France from Bramshott, arriving at Havre, France
  • 19 Apr 1917 - transferred to 42nd Battalion
  • 20 Apr 1917 - Struck off strength (of a unit) of the 73 Battalion, as reported by the 42 Battalion which he joined on this date
  • 02 July 1917 - Vimy - wounded at Avion
  • 04 Jul 1917 - "to 4th Gen Camieres" - gun shot wound to right leg and possibly right shoulder
  • 07 Jul 1917 - admitted to No. 4 General Hospital Dannes-Camieres (which was located there from Jan 16 to Apr 19, 1917S11 so the dates don't appear to line up)
  • 11 Jul 1917 - admitted to Infirmary Red Cross Hospital at Wimborne. Other entries for this date note he was "wounded and posted to 1st Que" and "reported to 1st Quebec [] Depot, Shoreham."
  • 12 Jul to 31 Jul 1917 - treated at Infirmary Hospital
  • 01 Aug 1917 - transferred to Canadian Convalescent Hospital at Bearwood Wokingham, Berkshire (also rendered as Bear Wood) Notes indicate shrapnel was still in his leg
  • 16 Aug 1917 - transferred to Woodcote Park Military Convalescent Hospital at EpsomS11
  • 29/30 Aug 1917 - transferred to Ontario Military Hospital at Orpington, Kent for an operation to remove the shrapnel in his right leg
  • 28 Sept 1917 - discharged from hospital. Struck off strength of 1st Que R D as reported by 20 Reserve Battalion
  • July 2 to Sept 28 From Medical Case Sheet (Army Form I. 1237.)

Wounded at Avion July 2nd, dressed at dressing station, sent to No. 12 field Amb. no dressing received. Sent to No. 22 C.C. Sat Bruay dressing received. July 4th sent to No. 4 Gen aty Camieres dressings only. July 12th left for Calais to embark for Eng. Arrived at Wimborned R. C. Hos. same date, dressings daily. Aug 1st Sent to Can Con at Bearwood. Aug 15th sent to Epsom Hospital (Canvalescent) Aug 29th arrived at Orpington. Scar from puncture wound on outer right thigh at junction of middle and lower third. Small mass felt 2" anteriod. Patient states that while walking any distance he has considerable pain in that area. And his leg becomes weak. Aug 30 Xray shows small piece of shrapnell. Sept 8 Seems to have no pain while resting Sept 14 Operation Shrapnel removed from musle of rt thigh at junction of middle and lower thigh. Shrapnel the size of a large size bean. Sept 17 Wound healed nicely Sept 26 Wound healed Sept 28 Discharged Furlough and duty

  • 16 Mar 1918 - Struck off strength of 20 Reserve Battalion, assigned to 42 Battalion
  • 17 Mar 1918 - taken on strength of 42 Battalion on arrival
  • 07 Apr 1918 - arrived at his unit
  • 12 Aug 1918 - initial report of his being killed in action gave the date as 12/13 Aug, but later this was revised to 12 Aug 1918. He was killed instantly from a sniper's bullet, during an attack "on PARVILLERS, Amiens front...while proceeding up Pelican Alley, between Fouquescourt and ParvillersS9

    Two More Eganville Boys Fall on Battlefield
    Ptes. Boland and Tait Killed in Action
    The gloom of death, stretching from Flanders fields, rests on two Eganville homes this week...Pte. Bert Y Boland, reported killed in action on August 13, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Boland, of Eganville. He was three years with the colors and had been wounded and sent to a military hospital in England. He was known as a sharpshooter, and, when recovered, he had a choice of remaining in England as a training officer or returning to France as a sniper. Neither appealed to him, but he decided to rejoin his comrades of a machine gun crew. With them he fought and died. He was one of three brothers in ranks....
