It is not known for certain that he was the son of Gijsbert de Veer (1640-1693) and Catharina von Roy, but it has been speculated since at least the first half of the 20th century that he was of this line. DNA testing has established that the descendants of his probable son Benjamin are related to the descendants of Gysbert Janszoon de Veer (1556-1615), the grandfather of Gijsbert de Veer (1640-1693).

Earlier speculation suggested a generation between Benjamin and Gijsbert (1640-1693), based on Benjamin's suggested birth year of "before 1696". However, if it is accurate that he married the Barbara Momber who was baptized in 1685 and previously married in 1687 and 1694, he was likely born by about 1675, and therefore more likely the son of Gijsbert (1640-1693) than the grandson.
