Biography of Benjamin Pollard Jr

Benjamin Pollard Junior was probably born at his father's home in Chatham County, NC. His father witnessed several deeds in Chatham and Orange Counties, North Carolina, and his father's land was recorded on 28 Dec 1878. The 1850 U S Census lists his age at 73 and b. NC which would make him born about 1777.

Benjamin Pollard Jr, first appears on the 1800 U. S. Census in Greenville, SC. He is listed with his wife and one son under 10 years of age[1]. This census indicated he was already married and her name is unknown[1]. She was born between 1774-1784[1][2][3]. She must have died before Dec 1829 as Benjamin married his 2nd wife, Rachel Parks, 6 Dec 1829 in Hall County, Georgia[5]. Another source shows that her name was Rachael A Park[7].

Benjamin Pollard Jun'r appears in the land records in the Greenville, SC Plat book G 1801-1819[17], 19 January 1805, p25 where he receives 76 acres of land. Other names indexed on this map include: John H Harrison, Lesly, and Waits.

In 1806 Benjamin Pollard Jun sells a tract of 30 acres to George Owen, signed in 1806 and recorded in 1810, Book H, p404. I failed to make of copy of this deed.

On 24 January 1808, he sells the same tract, being part of a plantation tract, for $500 to George Bain and along with William Pollard as a witness the deed was signed on 25 Jan 1808, and recorded 31 March 1808. Benjamin Pollard (Sr.) signs as a J. P. witnessing the signature of James Hide, and Samuel Hicks, Greenville, SC Deed Book H, page 75-76[11][12]. This deed mentions that this is part of a tract originally granted to Benjamin Pollard Jun'r and signed by Paul Hamilton on the 19 day of November 1805 as by the plats assigned to the said grants will more fully appear together with all and singular the rights...". This particular piece of property also mentions a sharing line with Frederick Croft, Jacob Croft, and William Pollard's property lines. It is witnessed by: Benjamin Pollard, J.P., and James Hide, Samuel Hicks.

Matthew Armstrong and David McDavid sell to Benjamin Pollard Jr, 200 acres, along both sides of the Reedy River. Signed on 24 May 1808 and recorded 5 April 1809, Book H, p 248-249[13][14]. Witnesses are David Armstrong and Marget Bottoms, also B Griffin, J.P.

B Pollard appears on the 1810 U. S. Census in Greenville, SC with his wife and three sons and a daughter under 10 years of age[2].

On 25 March 1813 Benjamin Pollard Jr. sells a plantation tract of land consisting of 200 acres and situated on both sides of the Reedy River to William Pollard. It included all the houses, out houses, Mill Machines, and other buildings. This deed was signed and notarized in 1813, but was not recorded until 9 Feb 1836[18].

Benjamin Pollard and his brother James Pollard served at least six months in the War of 1812 as a U. S. Dragoon in "The Late Expedition against the Creek Indians"[24][6].

On 6 Dec 1813, Benjamin Pollard Jr. sells a tract containing 50 acres of land for $50.00 To William Samford. This deed was witnessed by Benjamin Pollard J.P. on 26 Jan 1814, but was not recorded until 9 Feb 1836[21][22].

On 5 Feb 1814, Andrew Nelson and Benjamin Pollard Jr sell 100 acres of land to William Pollard for $400.00. This deed is recorded in Book S, page 47-48 on 9 Feb 1836. It is witnessed by James Pollard and Elizabeth Hide. How Benjamin Jr and Andrew Nelson acquire joint ownership is not clear.

Benj Pollard Junior next appears on the 1820 U S Census, Greenville, SC with one son under ten, one 10-15, three daughters under 10, and his wife. It appears that he as head of household was not marked[3].

On 15 March 1822, James A Pollard sells 160 acres of land on the south side of Pyles Branch to Benjamin Pollard, Jr. It is recorded 7 Sep 1822 in Book M, pp183-184[15][5]. With the exception of his interest in the "Pollard Mill" Benjamin Pollard Jr does not appear any more in the land records.

On 6 Dec 1829 Benjamin Pollard marries Rachel Parks in Hall County, Georgia[5][7].

Benjamin G Pollard is found on the 1830 U S Census living in, Carroll, Georgia[8]. His age is shown as between 50-59.

On the 16 of March 1836 four Pollards sold the shoal mill and part of a tract of land containing 5 acres to John Ashmore for $410.00. This deed was signed by John W Pollard, Benjamin Pollard Jr., William B Pollard, and Eli Pollard. It was also signed by their four wives: Barbary Pollard (John W), Mary Pollard (William B), Lily Pollard (Benj Pollard??), and Sarah Pollard (Eli Jr?). It was recorded in Book S, page 162[23] on 17 Oct 1836. Another Pollard researcher believes that Eli Pollard was married to Sarah.

Benjamin G Pollard is listed as a Justice of the Peace for Cherokee County, Alabama who were commissioned 26 April 1838, in Mrs. Frank Ross Stewart's book, Cherokee County History, 1836-1856[10]. This follows a tradition set by his father, Benjamin Pollard Sr.

It appears at this point that some of the Pollards move to Cherokee County, Alabama. Benjamin Pollard is missing in the 1840 census, but is found in the 1850 census living in Cherokee, Alabama. His children by Rachel are all listed as born in Alabama, which would mean he moved to Alabama about 1833.
