Ben Grandgenett

ONAWA, Iowa -- Ben John Grandgenett, 84, Onawa, Iowa, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. Dennis Olsen officiating. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Ben was born Dec. 23, 1920, at Pisgah, Iowa, the son of Nealy and Ida (Butts) Grandgenett. He lived his life in the area, working in Moorhead, Soldier, Sloan and Onawa, Iowa.

He married Elsie Campbell in February 1946. To this union, two daughters were born.

Ben loved life, especially children, serving as custodian in the West Monona Schools for nearly 20 years. He enjoyed baseball, gardening, his home, his Heavenly Father and his loving family.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Elsie, of 59 years; two daughters, Thelma Grandgenett of Altoona, Iowa, Cathy (Dennis) Lawrence of Onawa; three grandsons, Dennis Lawrence Jr., Jeff Lawrence and Barry John Grandgenett; four great-grandchildren, Benjamin, Taylor, Ian and Max Lawrence, and another expected in March; two sisters, Frances Thompson of Onawa and Ruth Young of Flatwood, Ky.; two brothers, Harlan and Otis of Onawa; and many nieces and nephews.

Grandgenett Reunion Here

The Grandgenett family reunion was held Sunday, Aug. 4, at the parish hall in St. Benedict, with 123 descendants of the late John and Caroline Grandgenett attending. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Grandgenett and Chip, El Paso, Tex., came the greatest distance. They are visiting this week with relatives and friends in the area. Others were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Weiner, the Franctt and Don Weiner families, all of Rock ford; Cletus Hejlik and Robert Grandgenett families, Britt; Henry Grandgenetts and Larry Rahes, Bancroft; Duane Grandgenett'family, of Iowa City; Albert Grandgenett family, Manilla; the Joe Grandgenett and Dale Widen families and Herbert Arndorf- ers, all of Corwith; Mrs. Martha Grandgenett family, the> Roy Stoffel family, John and Dick Grandgenett families, Phil Simpsons, Mike Frankl family, all of Algona. Larry, Leroy, Paul Grandgenett families, Wesley; Jon Green family, Forest City; Tom Burkhardt family, of Dubuque; Harold lllg family, of Bode; Harold Grandgenett family, Plymouth; and Jerry Barlow family of Mason City. Father Riesberg was a guest Mr. and Mrs. Leonard G. Henderson; Elmhurst, 111., were unable to attend. The birthday of Edward Grandgenett was * observed with a surprise cake.
