Facts and Events
Benjamin listed his occupation as farmer on the 1850 census of Morgan County, Illionois with value of property or real estate of $5000. He gave his age as 55 and his birthplace as Kentucky. There were 5 people listed as living in the same dwelling: Margaret Couchman, age 40, no occupation; William Couchman, age 20, occupation listed as farmer; Caleb Couchman, age 18, occupation listed as farmer; George Couchman, age 14, no occupation; and Maria Couchman, age 10, no occupation. "Atlas Map of Morgan County," Davenport, Iowa, Andreas, Lyter & Co. 1872: Page 30: B.F. Couchman, Sec 18, Farmer, Bourbon Co., KY. Came to county 1827. Page 119: Showed B.F. Couchman land #18 just east of tiny village of Arcadia. Page 121: Township 16 North, IIIrd Principal Meridian, Range 11 West. This township was first settled by Benjamin Couchman, the Carters, Rev. James Sims, etc. "History of Morgan County," Chicago, Donnelley, Loyd and Co. 1878: Page 734: Couchman, Benjamin F. farmer, Sec 18, P.O. Arcadia. Wilma (Webster) Couchman believes Benjamin had all of his 13 children by his first wife, Millicent Ruth Riggs, as he did not marry Margaret Humble(Himble?) until 6 September 1849. The 1850 Census of Morgan County, Illinois lists Benjamin's age as 55 so I had listed his birthdate as 1794 but did not have a day and month until Donald L. Couchman of Gaithersberg, Maryland sent me that information in 1996. Donald L. Couchman is a descendent of Erasmus Riggs Couchman who was a brother of Caleb Luther Couchman. Date taken from the Index of Arcadia Cemetary. This cemetary is on the line between Cass County and Morgan County, Illinois. This information was sent to me in 1988 by the Jacksonville Area Genealogical and Historical Society. References
