20 Sep 1891 - MCMULLIN'S SUICIDE. HE KILLED HIMSELF WHILE IN LIQUOR. Result of an Inquest - The Dead Man Came of a Wealthy Family.
An inquest was held yesterday in the case of Beauregard McMullin, who committed suicide early yesterday morning by shooting himself through the head. McMullin came to this city from Fresno, where he had an extensive vineyard, about two weeks ago. He was infatuated with a woman named Mattie Raymond, an inmate of the house at 205 Post street where he committed suicide, and with whom he had been consorting for two years. He had a quarrel with the woman in the morning before he shot himself, and he departed, swearing he would kill her. He returned to the house about 1 o'clock yesterday morning very drunk. He entered by the rear door, 108 Morton street, and went into the front room. The woman Raymond saw him lying across the bed on his back with a pistol in his hand. She went to the housekeeper and requested her to go into the front room and disarm McMullin. Almost the same moment a pistol shot was heard and on going into the front room the women found McMullin's face covered with blood, which flowed from a wound in his mouth and trickled down upon the bed covering. He had the pistol tightly grasped in his left hand. Notice was sent to the Coroner's office and the body was removed to the Morgue. The jury returned a verdict that McMullin came to his death from a gunshot wound in the head, inflicted by himself while under the influence of liquor. The decease was 28 years of age and a native of this State. His mother, Mrs. John McMullin, is at present traveling in Europe with other members of the family. He inherited a share of the large estate left by his father, the late John McMullin, a capitalist. The suicide's brother, J.S. McMullin, left Fresno for this city yesterday.
