According to Catherine Eunice Smith, Charles J. Smith's Granddaughter, Charles J Smith's Mother was Indian and his Father was part white. Bartholomew's Mother, Cynthia Teecomwas, may have met Ulster County, Ny born Valentine Smith while with her family at Brothertown in the Onieda Co area of New York State. She May Have Returned To Connecticut To Give Birth. Bartholomew is later found living in Montville, Connecticut. He could have been born in Onondaga Co or Cayuga Co Ny. Bartholomew is found in Conn Mohegan Indian Records In The 1820's And 1830's. Sarah Appears To Be A Widow By 1861 On The Mohegan Tribal Roll. So It Is Likely Bartholomew Died Before 1861. Bartholomew T. Smith is not found on any record after 1842. He probably died or left the Connecticut area. On September 25, 2003 The Great Grandaughter of Charles James Smith, Irene Reaves Degnen, Took A Dna Ancestry Test By Dnaprint Genomics Inc. The results were that Irene Reaves Degnen's DNA is 82% European and 18% Native American. We estimate that 12 of the 18% Native American DNA is from Charles James Smith. This indicates that Charles James Smith was more than 1/2 Indian. Both Charles James Smith's parents had to be Indian. One had to be full blooded and the other 1/2 or more.
