    [footnote p. 96] "No research has been made into the possible English origin of Bartholomew; his first documented appearance in America is his marriage."

    "Bartholomew1 Foster was born say 1640-45 and died in Gloucester on 5 December 1689. … His will, signed on 11 November 1689, left to his dear loving wife 'all my goods and estate as my houses and … orchards and gardens, horses and horse kynd [meaning kine?] … my sloop with all things appertaining thereto, but nothing of my estate if she remarry.' After specifically mentioning sons John Foster and Bartholomew Foster, he left all eight children—Bartholomew, John, Thomas, Samuel, Andrew, Ephraim, Edward, and Benjamin—five shillings each. The inventory, dated 1 January 1689[/90], noted house, lands, sloop, sheep, cow, horse, mare, colt, irons, brass and pewter, carpentry tools, and wearing apparel for a total of £130 9s. 6d."
