Barbara Roy was baptised on 14th July 1819 at Pagham in Sussex, daughter of a wheelwright named William Roy and his wife Mary. The family lived in the hamlet of Lagness.

On 9th February 1839, aged 19, Barbara married a blacksmith named Henry Hammond, who was also from Pagham. They went on to have four children baptised at Pagham between 1839 and 1847. They 1841 census finds Barbara and her first son, William, living a little way along the coast at Littlehampton, whilst Henry was working in the Aldwick area of Pagham parish on census night.

Henry and Barbara had a daughter named Eliza baptised in 1842, then a son named George baptised in 1843. Sadly their daughter Eliza died aged four in 1846. The following year Henry and Barbara had a son named James baptised.

Barbara died when she was only 28 years old, being buried at Pagham on 21st May 1848. There was probably an illness in the family; her five year old son George died three weeks later. Henry survived Barbara by 32 years, but does not appear to have remarried.

This baptism has been linked to the Barbara Roy who married Henry Hammond on the basis that their marriage certificate gives her father's name as William Roy, carpenter, whilst she lived in Pagham at the time of her marriage and her age at death suggests she was born around 1819.
