Facts and Events
Name Barbara Kloss
Alt Name Barbara Kloss
Gender Female
Birth? 31 Jan 1852
Marriage Feb 1870 to Nicholas Hoffman
Death? 8 Apr 1871

Her family came from Germany in 1842 and settled in Straussberg (Sauk Village) IL, just across the Indiana border. The town was named for the area they had left. After her marriage to Nicholas, they settled in a small Dyer home just south of the EJ&E railroad, west of Hart Street. But tragedy struck the year following their marriage when Barbara died in childbirth. A year later, Nicholas married the aunt of Barbara, Louise Kloss. They lived in the same Dyer home.

The 1900 US Census shows the family of John Kloss. The below assumption is invalid, because he was Louise's younger brother born in 1859 - eight years younger than Louise. So now another assumption can be made.

Louise's older brother, Joseph may have had a daughter Barbara. If Joseph was about twenty years older than Louise, Barbara could have been her niece.

=============================================================

Marge,

After reading my last e-mail, I should have stated that "MNU" meant "maiden name unknown".

My guess on the relationships between Barbara and Louise is that Barbara married one of Louise's nephews. So Louise was her aunt by marriage. Louise had seven sisters and two brothers - John and Joseph. I have no birthdates for any of them. Joseph married Rose Scheidt and I have no information on any offspring.

John Kloss married and had twelve children, including six sons - John, George, Joseph, Andrew, Arthur, and Leo. I don't have any marriage info for these. I am assuming that Barbara (MNU) married one of them. The following scenario is what I have developed.

If Louise's (b.1851) brother,John, was born about twenty years before (about 1831) her, and he had a first son, John (Jr.), that was born close to Louise's birthday, she would have been a very young aunt to her nephew. Twenty years later when John (Jr.) married Barbara (MNU) (before 1871), Louise became her aunt. If John (Jr.) suddenly died, his widow Barbara (MNU) Kloss was free to marry Nicholas in 1871. A year later when she died in childbirth, Nicholas Hoffman married her aunt, Louise Kloss in 1872.

I am going to use this assumption, and I've changed Barbara Kloss to Barbara (MNU) Kloss. I think that is also the reason we don't have any information on Barbara's parents.

I'd be interested to know your thoughts.

Love, Harvey
