Obituary of Barbara Ann Bowers:

PIONEER RESIDENT of Liberty Township Gone in Death of Mrs. Upton Ash--Over Four Score Years Old.

Mrs. Barbara Ash, wife, wife of Upton Ash, passed away this morning at about 5 o'clock at her home, nine miles east of Fostoria and two miles south of Kansas, in Liberty township, on the farm and almost in the same spot where she began housekeeping when she was newly-married 64 years ago.

Mrs. Ash's death resulted from the infirmities of old age, as she was 82 years, 2 months and 7 days old. She had been ill for three weeks and her death was expected.

Mrs. Ash was born a dozen miles from Buffalo, N.Y. and came to Seneca CO with her parents in 1834, settling near Bettsville. The Ash family came here from Bedford CO, PA in 1833. Barbara Bowers and Upton Ash were married on August 21, 1842. At that time, Liberty township was a backwoods and Mr. Ash set to work to hew out a clearing and build a log house. The cornerstone of this privitive dwelling still stands in the front yard of the present Ash home.

Three children survive. They are: George W., Edmund R. and William A. Ash, and all of them live in the vicinity of their old home. There are also 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. This is the first death in the family, which is somewhat remarkable. There are four sisters and four brothers: Mrs. Abraham McIntyre, Mrs. John Feasel and Mrs. Clark Michaels, all of Bettsville, Mrs. John Bunn of Kansas, John Bowers of Wood CO, Moses and Samuel Bowers of Bettsville and Jesse Bowers of Battlecreek, Michigan. Upton Ash, husband of the deceased is about 74 (sic) years of age.

Mrs. Ash had been a member of the United Brethren church for over a half century. She was not only a devout church member, but she was a good wife and mother and was highly esteemed in the neighborhood where she spent most of her life.

Funeral services will be held at the Liberty church Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock, the Rev. Counselor of Burgoon, assisted by the Rev. Steffanni of Bettsville officiating. Interment in Liberty cemetery. {1850-OH-SENECA-Liberty-235-060-060-02} {1860-OH-SENECA-Liberty-156-1127-1111-02}
