Listed as a settler of Montebelo, Illinois before its organization as a township in 1829, though he is not found in the 1830 or 1840 census in Illinois. Hancock County Historical Atlas shows that he came to Illinois in 1837. Living in Hancock County Illinois at 1850 United States Census, $1600 in real estate. In Montebelo twp at 1860. In Carthage at 1870 Census, $4000 real estate, $2100 personal estate. In Elvaston, IL at 1880 census, where he is called disabled. An Austin Wardwell is listed in Nauvoo, Illinois Tax Index, 1842 Will: In the Name of God Amen. I Austin Wardwell of the County and State aforesaid being in my ordinary health and of sound mind and memory do hereby make publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking all former wills or codicals by me made whatsoever. First after all my just debts are paid I will devise and bequeath unto my beloved Wife Melinda Wardwell all the property real personal or mixed of which I may die seized to be held by her for her sole use and behoof without limitation. Second, I hereby appoint my friend George W. Batchelder my sole Executor of this my last will and testament.
