"Austin L. WARDWELL. of North Penobscot, was released from suffering, July 3rd, aged 84 years (sic). Bro. Wardwell was afflicted with consumption. Nine years before his decease he was taken with bleeding at the lungs, which continued by spells until the last. He was a man of more than ordinary ambition which caused him to show the brightest side always in his affliction. A man of rare talent. He reason and judgement were strong. Ha was a good citizen, a kind neighbor, loving companion, and devoted father. Several years ago he commenced to seek the Lord, but an unkind word from someone threw him back, and from that time until near his last be made no public profession of religion, but told the writer that he kept up a life of prayer. A few weeks before his death I asked him about the state of his mind. He replied I always respected Christians, and have a love for them that I have not for the world, and God's ways I revere, sad though my lot is an afflictive one, yet God's ways are perfect. For some three weeks before his departure hewas filled with the Holy Ghost. On the Sabbath before he winged his way to the better land he partook of the emblems of the body and blood of his Saviour with his wife, a widowed mother, his brother Rev. L. D.Wardwell, several of his sisters, and an number of friends. He had also the pleasure of seeing his wife and little son dedicated to God in Christian baptism on the morn of that memorable Sabbath. After communion he exclaimed, "O what glory!" His very countenance was lighted up with the light of the glorious image of the divine. He suffered much, but was calm, peaceful, hopeful, and on the Morn of the 3rd of July he dropped all that was mortal, and now doubtless stands in the presence of Him who died to save him, crying, "Holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty," who liveth and reigneth forever". -Zion's Herald and Wesleyan Journal 09 September 1863
