Taken from the Lidderdale Centennial Book: August Dietrick Onken, the eldest son of Dietrick and Theda (Mahrings) Onken was born in Funnix, Ostfriesland, German, in 1865. He was three years old when his parents came to America. After two years in Illinois the family moved to Sheridan Township, Carroll Co. Iowa. He attended the Sheridan School and then engaged in farming which was his life's work. In 1888 he married Emma Wenck, the daughter of Christian and Mary (Rabe) Wenck. Their children were: one daughter (Bessie), Mrs Henry Schroeder, Three sons, William C., Elmer F. and Lester D. Onken. August was a member of Immanuel Lutheran. He was interested in the affairs of his community and served as a director of the township school for many years. August died in 1937 and Mrs. Onken in 1944.

August Dietrick Onken Taken from the Carroll Times. May 31, 1937. August D. Onken, prominent Sheridan township farmer, passed away at the St. Anthony hospital at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon. His death following a long illiness caused by complication of ailments. He had been in failing health for about a year, his condition becoming serious about 11 weeks ago. For the last nine weeks he had been a patient at the hospital. The body was taken Tuesday afternoon from the Huffman Funeral Home to the family home six and one half miles north of Carroll. A short service at the family home at 1:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon will be followed by final rites at the Lidderdale Lutheran church at 2:00 O'clock, with the pastor, the Rev. R. Herrmann, officiating. Burial will be in the Carroll cemetery and six nephews will be pallbearers. Mr. Onken, oldest son of Dietrick and Theda Onken, was born in Hanover, Germany, Sept. 8, 1865. He was only three years old when he came to America with his parents who settled in Sterling, Illinois. After residing there for two years the family came to Sheridan township, Carroll, Iowa. From then on, Mr. Onken lived in Sheridan township. After attending the Sheridan school, he engaged in farming, which was his lifes work. On March 1, 1888, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Wenck, also fo Sheridan township. Mr and Mrs Onken have resided for 49 years on the farm on which they started housekeeping. For 34 years of that time Mr. Onken was actively engaged in farming. Fifteen years ago, when he decided to retire, he built a new home on the farm in which he and Mrs. Onken have lived ever sence. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Onken, four of whom survive. One son died in infancy. Surviving with his wife are, one daughter, Mrs Henry Schroeder (Bessie) of Varina and three sons, William C., Elmer F. and Lester D. all of Carroll: 13 grandchildren and one great grandchild. He also leaves a sister, Mrs. Walter Mott(Hannah) of Cedar Rapids and one brother A.C. Onken of Carroll, and many nieces an nephews. Mr. Onken was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church of Lidderdale. He was interested in the affairs of his community and served as a director of the township school for a long period of years.
