Parentage

In 2004, Gary Boyd Roberts wrote that Asahel was the son of Jonas of Newark, New Jersey, and Mary Hinman's ancestry was unknown. The only source given is a reference to "Michael J. Wood of London" that indicates that perhaps Wood made some new findings. That name isn't Google-able. However, every other reference online follows the trail from the cemetery (the source of those dates is unknown, however) to the birth record for Asel, b. 13 Mar 1742 in Goshen, son of Samuel. Samuel seems to be Jonas's brother, and Mary is usually then listed as Jonas's child, so the theories aren't far off. But it remains unclear whether Roberts had a more reliable source than the cemetery or whether that information post-dates his 2004 column.

Early sources (i.e. They Came to Warrick Co, IN; Genealogy of the Puritans by R.R. Hinman) also show that Samuel's father was James, and that he was born in Southbury, Connecticut. To the extent this is mentioned in later sources, they note that the Goshen records show his birth as son of Samuel.

Rhoda was the daughter of Asahel Hinman and his certain cousin Mary Harris Hinman, whose ancestry, however, cannot be traced. Asahel Hinman, who died in Warrick Co., was a son of Jonas/Jonah Hinman (b. 1700 in Stratford, Conn.) and Elizabeth Ward, of the New Jersey family (a line much studied by Michael J. Wood of London). Jonas was the son of Edward Hinman, Jr., and Hannah Burroughs...
