    FOULKE FUNERAL
Services will be Held at the Home In Arcadia Saturday
Funeral services for Arthur (Pete) Foulke of Arcadia, who committed suicide Wednesday evening at his home, will be conducted privately Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the home. Rev. R. L Logan will conduct the services, after which burial will be in the Scherer cemetery southwest of Arcadia.
Prior to the services, the body will lie in state at the home, and friends may call there any time prior to 2:00 o'clock Saturday.
Arthur Foulke was born February 17, 1894 near Bakers Corner, the son of George and Mary Francis (Underwood) Foulke. On April 17, 1920, he was united in marriage to Inez Iva Everman of Russellville.
Soon after their marriage, the couple settled in Arcadia where Mr Foulke and Elmer Long started the Foulke & Long garage which they have operated since that time.
Surviving besides the grieved widow are one daughter, Helen Foulke, age 12; his mother, Mrs George Foulke; three sisters, Mrs Alice Phillips of Sheridan and Mrs Grace Robbins and Mrs Sarah Ross of Bakers Corner; and one brother, Alvin Foulke of Cicero.
Mr. Foulke was a member of he Masonic lodge, the West Grove Friends church, and the Arcadia Lions club. Tuesday evening, the deceased was elected the office of the Lions club, his many friends little dreaming at that time that he was so soon to leave their midst.
The entire town of Arcadia was shocked to hear of Mr Foulke's rash act, and all were much grieved, as he was a man beloved by all who knew him.

    Extract:
SUICIDE OF A. FOULKE AT ARCADIA, WED
Garage ad Filling Station Man Blew Off Top of His Head
THE FAMILY WAS AWAY FROM HOME
Friends Say Deed Was the Result of Financial Troubles

Arthur Foulke, aged forty, committed suicide at his home in Arcadia, Wednesday afternoon, by shooting himself with a shotgun. The top of his head was blown off and it is evident that he died instantly. No funeral arrangements have been made but it is thought that the services will be held Friday afternoon.

It is not known when the deed was committed but he is believed to have taken his life shortly after one o'clock in the afternoon soon after leaving the garage of Foulke & Long, he being a partner in the firm.

The wife and daughter, Helen, aged twelve, left the home in the car shortly after noon to go to Indianapolis and did not return until late in the evening. They left dinner on the table for Mr. Foulke. William Odle, employed in the Ledger office, was in Arcadia shortly after 5 o'clock on business and was told by some boys that Foulke was lying on the floor of his home. He could find no one about the town who had seen him since about noon. Meeting Dr. E.V. Shockney on the street, Odle, who by this time suspected something was wrong, asked the doctor to accompany him to the Foulke home and they found the body in the screened porch in the rear of the house. Brains were scattered over the floor but the gun was still between the legs of the deceased, indicating that he had held it there when he fired the fatal shot. The load from the gun had also broken glass in the rear door.

It is said that the suicide was the result of financial worries. At least several Arcadia friends of the family say that he had talked to them during recent weeks about his financial condition.

Mr. Foulke has been associated with Elmer Long in a garage and filling station business in Arcadia for several years and he was always held in high esteem by all.

He served three years as treasurer or the Lions Club and was re-elected recently.

The deceased was born on the Foulke homestead five miles west of Cicero, February 8, 1894, being the son of George and Frances (Underwood) Foulke and spent most of his life in that community until his marriage to Miss Inez Everman in May, 1920. A year following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Foulke moved to Arcadia and have since resided there. He is survived by his mother, who spent the past winter in his home and who is in feeble health; the widow and daughter; a half brother Alvin Foulke, living near Cicero, and three sisters, Grace Robbins, who resides on the home farm where the mother is now living; Mrs. Alice Phillips, near Sheridan, and Mrs. Sarah Ross, residing on the Range Line Road.

It was announced late Thursday afternoon that the funeral will be held at the home at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon and interment will take place in the Sheridan cemetery. The masons will be in charge. Friends may call at the residence to view the body at anytime until the hour of the services. Raymond Shaffer is in charge of the funeral arrangements. He is survived by his mother, who spent the past winter in his home] - [Microfilm Repository: Hamilton East Public Library - Noblesville, Hamilton Co, Indiana] Reference number: Acc000877

[Extract: Arthur tried to step in and help his mother save her farm. He tried to take Rob Ross ID0085 to court but it was too late. Arthur couldn't save the farm and that is the reason he committed suicide. Arthur had taken over the farm and made Rob Ross ID0085 move out. He didn't do any of the farming - Oscar Robbins ID0014 and his family moved to the farm to do the farming. Arthur would come out almost every day and help out with fixing up the house, barn, fences, etc. Rob [Ross ID0085] had about beat G Foulke [ID0078] her to death - The courts said they couldn't do anything to Rob Ross because it had been longer than 7 years - the statute of limitations had run out. Dad feels that both Arthur and G Foulke died over the loss of this farm. G Robbins just moved away rather than getting any more involved. The farm went back to the bank. If Arthur had lived, he and G Robbins could probably have figured a way to bought the farm and made a go of it]

  13. Walter C Robbins ID0005. Interview 29 Sept 2005. Interviewed by his son, Walter C Robbins, Jr.

[Extract: He could fix anything. He was out at the farm [Foulke Farm] all the time. Dad and Myron both really liked him. Dad hated it when Arthur got killed - when he killed himself. He helped us all the time on the farm when anything went wrong he was right there - tractors or anything.

He and another guy were in the garage together and half the time he was at the farm and let the other guy take care of the garage. He loved to be on the farm - he was not a farmer but he did everything else. He worked on the windows on the house, the tractors, etc.

He committed suicide - used a shotgun and blew his head off. Grandpa Robbins went there to see him and said it was a mess.

WW1 - His parents, mostly his mother, wouldn't let him go to the service because of their religion - that made him a Conscientious objector and he ended up having to go to prison for so long for not going to the service. People thought that might have been a part of why he killed himself. His parents probably should have let him go to the service - he would have been better off.

Between losing his mother's farm, his wife spending all his money and maybe the prison thing led to his suicide.

Do you know how long he was in prison or where? Don't know maybe until the war ended.

Do you know where he is buried? Arcadia I would guess. I don't know for sure. The other Foulkes are buried at Sheridan - they bought enough plots for all the kids.

Was Arthur a big guy? About my size - not fat or anything. Was he bald? Not that I knew of - he always had a hat on when I saw him. When he came to the farm he would stay for 1 or 2 hours usually - not all day or anything.

[Extract: Arthur was out at the farm almost every day doing something. He removed all the windows of the house and painted and puttied them - He also worked on the tractors too. He was a real nice guy - He seemed to spend more time at the farm than at home.
Arthur was good at everything - Dad feels that he probably got a lot of his skills from being around Arthur. Grandpa Robbins [ID0014] could do most anything too, but he was not as good a mechanic as Arthur - He had built a house and barns. Arthur's partner/helper moved to Cicero after Arthur died in 1935 - he had a daughter. Arthur had a nice home in Arcadia - one of the nicest ones]

What - do you remember much about Uncle Arthur
He was quite a mechanic - he was a number one mechanic - he could fix any car
Ok so that is what he did for a living?
Yeah he had his own garage and everything
    Where was his garage?
In Arcadia - he had his own house and everything [page 2] he lived pretty close to his garage - not at his garage but pretty close… but him and another guy was in together - he owned it but he had a helper. [page 4] - back then well you wasn't making any money anyway anyplace well he was a mechanic but you didn't make that kind of money you do now - probably work on a car if he got 10 dollars probably he was lucky you know - maybe it would be 2 dollars or 3 dollars - but he was a good mechanic but that wouldn't have made any difference because and then his wife she liked to spend money - and that made it worse yet - she wanted everything number 1 [page 11]
