CALAIS - Arlene Lorraine Wardwell, surrounded by her loving family, went to be with her Lord and loved ones Dec. 8, 2005, in Titusville, Fla. Born Sept. 22, 1914, the eighth child of 10, to Lillian Harriman Dwelley and Morey Aldace Dwelley in Meddybemps. Arlene was an honors graduate, salutatorian and member of the National Honors Society, graduating from Calais Academy in 1931. She married Owen Willis Wardwell in 1933, and is the mother of three children, Dr. Douglas Wardwell of Narragansett, R.I., Rev. Lila Jane Tibbitts of Titusville, Fla. and Judith Anne Putnam of Calais. Arlene was in sales, having been a salesperson in Rines of Bangor and Unobskeys in Calais, where she was also a fashion window decorator. She was also a past correspondent for the Calais Advertiser and for a short time before her husbands death, did some free lance work for the Associated Press. Music was an enjoyable and integral part of her life and she enjoyed singing with her children at home and in talent and variety shows in Washington County. Arlene played the piano in dance orchestras with her husband who played the saxophone. She was a charter member, past president, membership and publicity chairwoman for the Calais chapter of the "Sweet Adelines" and sang baritone in the "Down Easter Quartet" with her lifetime friend, Marie McGarrigle. Arlene also played piano for her church, the First Congregational Church of Calais, where she was a member for many years and sang in the choir with her daughter, Judith. She was an organist, Past Matron and Life member of Orion Chapter 45 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Calais. Arlene was predeceased by her husband and nine siblings, six brothers and three sisters. Surviving family members are Dr. Douglas Wardwell, Narragansett of R.I., Rev. Lila Jane Tibbitts of Titusville, Fla. and Judith Anne Putnam of Calais; grandchildren, Lisa Jayne Eggers of Titusville, Fla., Jeffery Tibbitts of Cibolo Texas, Loren Kinney, Hallowell, Julie Saillant of Barkhamstead, Conn. and Laurie Dragunoff of Hamden, Conn.; great-grand-children, Lindsey Dragunoff of Hamden, Conn., Mary Echevarria and Jennifer Eggers of Titusville, Fla., Jessica Tibbitts-Smith of Freeport, Rebecca Tibbitts of Cibolo, Texas; and one remaining niece, Dimitra Donna Laurie Dwelley of West Roxbury, Mass. A memorial service celebrating Arlene Wardwell's life will be held 3 p.m. Jan. 6, 2006, at the First Congregational Church in Calais with a reception to follow. -Bangor Daily News 21 December 2005
