Immigrated to US in l856 went back to Scotland andreturned a second time . Family in Scotland was wealthy lived in a castle.

According to the 1910 Mobile census there were 14 children, 11 living.


Archie, as he was called by friends, enlisted first on April 23, 1861 in Shorts, Baldwin, AL, USA in what was called the Baldwin rifles. He went on October 13, 1861 in Mobile, Mobile, AL, USA. He continued until the fall of 1862. He was detailed to work on confederate gunboats at Mobile, and was captured in Mobile Bay December 1864 and imprisoned until May 15, 1865, when he was paroled.

As a young boy, he shipped out to sea with his father as a cabin boy. He went all around the world for 5 years. He then returned to Glasgow when his mother died. He took a ship to Cuba then to navy cove where they dropped anchor. They went on to Fish River where he jumped ship.

He worked for Josephus Archibald Nelson who had a ship repair yard. When he enlisted in the CSA Mr. Nelson suggested to appropriate officers that a man of his caliber (shipbuilding) should be transferred to ship carpenter. He worked in Orin Bluff, Selma, and Mobile on gunboats Gaines and Tennessee.
