Anthony Meager was baptised on 21st February 1647 at Benington in Hertfordshire, son of Mary Meager, formerly Day, and her husband Anthony, a husbandman. He was the third of the couple's eight children, although the eldest child had died as a baby, as would the youngest, making Anthony effectively the second eldest of six surviving children. In 1667, when Anthony was 20 years old, his father died.

In 1669, when Anthony was 22, the family saw three deaths in quick succession, perhaps suggesting an illness in the family. Anthony's older brother John died in July, aged 25, followed by his brother Robert in August, aged 14, then his sister Mary in September, aged 11. The surviving family now consisted Anthony's widowed mother Mary and just three surviving children (Anthony, Henry and Sarah), of whom Anthony was now the eldest. Quite likely Anthony as eldest son now took on the role of supporting his mother.

Anthony's mother died in 1681, when Anthony was 34 years old. Anthony had not married in her life time, but married within a year of her death, perhaps supporting the idea that he looked after her.

On 25th July 1682, aged 35, Anthony married Elizabeth Godfrey at the nearby market town of Baldock. After their marriage they returned to Anthony's native Benington where they had 12 children (including twins in 1694) between 1682 and 1707. Elizabeth must have been quite a bit younger than him judging by the fact that he was 60 by the time their youngest child was born.

Anthony died in 1719, being buried on 3rd October at Benington. He was 72 years old.
