Andrew grew up in the home of his aunt Rachel Donelson Jackson and her husband, future President Andrew Jackson. As an adult, he served as President Jackson's private secretary, while his wife Emily served as secretary. He remained active in politics after Jackson's retirement, and was eventually nominated to the Whig Party ticket as Vice President in 1856.
