Biography

Amos Worrell11 Carroll 1765-1815: The Settlements, by John Perry Alderman; Alderman Books, Hillsville VA, 1985, p. 116-117. Amos Worrell, according to the family Bible, was born Jan. 17, 1772, which does not compare badly with his 1850 census record (Carroll, Household #221) which shows him as seventy-seven years old and born in Pennsylvania. He was clearly married twice, and it is said this his first wife was Ellen Roberts. The second wife was Mary Shinault, daughter of Benjamin Shinault, whom he married probably on Nov. 10, 1825 in Grayson. Amos bought the Isaiah Shockley farm of 160 acres in 1802 (Grayson, D.B. 1-465) and later in 1822 bought Bob Hundley’s 75 acres which adjoined it (Grayson, D.B. 4-394). It was all the land he ever cared to own, and in 1849 he gave it to his youngest sons, Joseph and Jonathan (Carroll D.B. 3-14). He had a multitude of children; traditional accounts vary as to how many there were in all, as to which belonged to the first family and which to the second. A careful analysis of the old census records has left the writer with the considered, but not certain opinion that there were fourteen of the first marriage and seven of the second. Neither is there any record of Amos’ death; he was still living with his son Jonathan in 1860 (Carroll, 1860 census, Household #258/259). The first family probably included (1) James B. Worrell, born about 1799, who married first Olive (sometimes called Alice) Henson in Grayson in 1820 and who remarried Rhoda McKeel in 1847. He was called Buck Worrell because he lived on Buckhorn Creek; he and the second wife moved away in the 1850s. (2) Catherine (“Katie”) Worrell, born about 1800, married Reuben Dalton; she lost her husband in the 1840s after bearing him eleven children. (3) Sarah Worrell, married first John Phillips, lived in Floyd County, and remarried Luke Cox there in the 1840s. (4) Eda Worrell, born about 1802, married John Edwards in 1820; she died in 1859. (5) John Worrell, married Susannah Shinault in 1826 and died at Palo Alto, Texas in 1847 while serving with the Kentucky troops in the Mexican War. His widow’s pension claim (File #OWF 28797) lists five brothers and four sisters of John: Joshua, James, Amos, Esau and Shadrack for the brothers and Katy Dalton, Sally Phillips, Edie Edwards, and Charlotte Franklin for the sisters. (6) Joshua Worrell, born about 1806, married Cynthia Minter. (7) Shadrack Worrell. (8) Charlotte Worrell, born about 1811, married Henry Franklin in 1835. (9) William Worrell, born about 1812, married Abigail Shinault in Wythe County in 1833. (10) Esau Worrell. (11) Amos Worrell, born about 1818, married Lovicy Akers of Floyd County; he died in 1895. (Nancy Worrell who married William Shinault in Wythe County in 1834. (13) Lucinda Worrell who married William Stilwell in 1829. (14) Carter Worrell who married Mary Largen in 1845 and remarried Rachel Sutphn in 1874. The second family is not as easy to identify. It definitely included (1) Mary Worrell who married Timothy Dalton in 1845; she died in 1913. (2) Joseph Worrell (1832-1908) who married Emily Shinault in 1851, and (3) Jonathan Worrell who married Matilda Branscome in 1866. Likely the second family also included a Luke Worrell who married Mildred Dalton in 1849 and a daughter named Elizabeth Worrell.
