Senate, 61st Congress, 3rd Session, Report. no. 1042, HR 27305.

HR 27305. America Walton, aged 75 years, served as an enlisted man, second and first lieutenants, and captain in Company B, Eighth Regiment Maine Volunteers, from September 7, 1861, to July 2, 1865, and is now a pensioner under the act of February 6, 1907, at $20 per month.
He was formerly pensioned under the act of June 27, 1890, at $12 per month by reason of senile debility and disease of heart. He was originally pensioned under the general law at $4 per month on account of chronic diarrhea. Increase of pension under this law was denied in March, 1909.
A claim on account of disease of head was properly rejected by the Pension Bureau in May, 1909.
The Trenton (N. J.) board of surgeons, which last examined claimant on October 21, 1908, found him afflicted with marked intolerance of heat, loss of memory, total deafness of right ear, severe deafness of left ear, bronchitis, and partial paralysis of the left arm and leg, the result of an attack of paralysis five or six years prior to 1908, and general atrophy of the muscles all over the body. Dr. Leland, of Lowell, Mass.--claimant's home--states that he has treated claimant for diarrhea and results of sunstroke, an irregular and weak heart, kidney and stomach troubles, and a general nervous and physical debility, which has caused total inability to labor.
He has no property and no income aside from his pension except some State aid.
Having rendered nearly four years of faithful service and being now very old and poor, an increase of his pension to $30 per month is recommended.

    MARRIED FIFTY YEARS
Capt. and Mrs. America Walton, of 22 Apple street, observed their golden wedding yesterday. A large number of relatives and friends of the happy couple called on them during the evening and showered them with congratulations and costly gifts, showing the esteem in which the captain and his wife are held.
During the evening an informal musical program was rendered and a dainty luncheon was served. There were friends present from Waltham, Woburn, Providence, Springfield and other places, and many letters were received from friends and old acquaintances in Maine and other places.
America Walton was born on Franklin plantation, Oxford county, Maine, August 17, 1835. At the age of ten he moved to Pere, Me., with his parents, where he received his early education. He came to Lowell at the age of 23 and secured employment at the Lowell Bleachery. Later he joined Co. B of the City Guards, and in 1860 he went to Patten Me., there enlisting as a private in Co. B of the eighth Maine regiment on Aug. 3, 1861.
During his service Captain Walton was shot twice, neither wound, however, proving serious. In 1862 after being made sergeant and lieutenant he was promoted to captain.
Mrs. Sophronia B. Dow Walton, was born in Avon, Me. in 1840. She was married to Capt. Walton on June1, [illegible]

"America Walton was born in Franklin Plantation, Maine in August of 1835. His family moved to Peru, Maine when he was nine and then on to Lowell by himself in 1856. He worked at the Lowell Bleachery and joined the Company B of the City Guards. He must of resigned from the 6th Massachusetts because he is not listed on the roster in 1861 and in May of 1861 he went to Patten Maine where he joined the 8th Maine Company B Infantry. In 1863 while on furlough he married Sophronia Dow. He was involved in several battles and was shot twice. He was at Appomattox when Lee surrendered to Grant on April 9, 1865. He was promoted often and ended up a Captain in 1865. He died in Lowell March 15, 1919 and is buried in Edson Cemetery. "
