BIOGRAPHY: Sicard+ (Midi), var. Secard, Segard+, Sichard (Puy-de-Dome),et (pays d'oii) Sicard, anc. n. de bapt. Germ.: Sig-hard- (sig-,victoire; hard- dur. Fort). V. le suivant et Sibert. The name SICARD isvery old and was noted in the 5th century in Languedoc, south France. The name is derived from SIGHARD, meaning "hardvictory" as identified above. There is also a SICARD, Prince ofBeneventum (Italy) 832-839 A.D. Coinage with the legend SIC?ARDV wasissued in three denominations. Note: Note: Most of the SICARDs, SECORDs, SEACORDs, SECORs, et al in the UnitedStates are descended from the same patriarch - Ambroise. Note: Note: Some others answering to this name were probable descendants of those whoserved under LaFayette and remained behind, or immigrated later. Onesuch, was a M. M. Secor who was born in a small Austrian town of Zika;came to US and became mayor of Racine, WI in 1884. Note: Note: There are some SICARDs in Louisiana who probably came from theFrench West Indies in the 1600s. Note: Note: Have also found a Choctaw family named Secor. Note: Note: There is a possibility that Secaur equalsSecor/Secord/Sycar/Sicard/Seacord. Generally speaking, the descendants ofAmbroise Sicard JUNIOR, retained the name Seacord and lived in NewRochelle, New York, with later generations using Secord. Note: Note: The descendants of Daniel Sicard took the name Secord. Daniel also livedin New Rochelle, New York and his descendants used Secord and moved on toCourtland Manor, New York and other areas. Daniel Sicards descendants,i.e. Peter, James & John, & Daniel & John of Oakland Twp., (Canada) obtained Land Grants in UpperCanada, now Ontario, the lst three as Butler's Rangers, and Daniel servedwith Joseph Brant's Volunteers, and John with the New York Volunteers.(This information has been published on the Loyalist Institute in the Messages & Query Section). Note: Note: The descendants of Jacques Sicard used the name Secor and lived inthe Rockland Cty, area of New York. The problem is that names werespelled as they sounded then, by whomever was writing them down, i.e.Census Taker, etc. Note: Note: If your ancestors lived in Quebec, Canada, then there is a NicholasSicard b. 1629 in Mornac France who may have been a relative of Ambroise. His son Jean Sicard came to Quebec and that family line is on theInternet. Some of these descendants also adopted the name Secord. Elias & William Seacord, settled in the NewBrunswick, & Nova Scotia, Canada area, and they too later used the nameof Secord. Note: Note: There is a coat of arms which depicts a Phoenix rising from itsashes to a silver cross located between 2 gold stars on a bluebackground. However, the family does not appear to be on a royal line ?so this is probably a later "made-up" artifact. Note: Note: Ambroise Sicard was born in 1631 Mornac sur Seudre which is nearMarennes, south of La Rochelle, France, a small village on the Atlanticcoast. His family is purported to have been there since the 14th century.Any further search for his ancestors has proved futile, probably because of his adherence to the Protestantfaith, the Catholic regime destroyed all Protestant records. He was a"saunier" i.e., a salt worker or salt farmer. Records indicate that he,his wife and 6 children fled their home in 1681 or 1685. He left some vineyards valued at 40 livres. Hearrived in this country with no wife and 5 children (originally therewere seven, two Jacques, one born 1668 who died.) Note: Note: The wife and this extra child apparently died en route or theoriginal French listing of 6 children may have been in error or one ofthe 6 children may have been Ambroise II's wife? Note: Note: The family arrived in the Westchester County area, north of New York Citybefore 1688 via England where they had been wards of a French church inThreadneedle Street in London, England. The church's refugee committeegave him 40 pounds to come to North America. (Source: The Huguenots in America, by Jon Butler. Pg. 52.)"For example, refugees identified in the records as persons of "MiddleQuality" like Jeremie Cothonneau, Ambroise Sicard and Daniel Jouet, received between L25 and L40 to transport themselves and their families to South Carolina.) Note: Note: We next find Ambroise Sicard helping to establish the French Church ofNew York. His son Ambroise Jr. and wife Jeanne Perron had a daughterMadelayne, who was the first baptism in this Church Sunday, November,1688. (See Records for this Church put on the Internet by Tim Hewitt - under Secor/Messages/171.html) Wenext find Ambroise Sicard in New Rochelle, New York, in 1689. (See Mapsunder Westchester New York GenWeb under What's New and UnderMiscellaneous) Ambroise Sicard's Will was written in 1700 but he did not die until ca 1712. Note: Note: Certain close associations that he had with people who had come from theWest Indies may possibly indicate that he might have been there before hecame to New York City. His eldest son, Ambroise Sicard, Jr., was in thatCity by the fall of 1688, and, no doubt, his father was also in the City at the same time. He wasin New Rochelle sometime prior to February, 1692, when he was living onthe farm in the West Division owned by Jean Pelletreau. This farm he purchased July 24, 1693, but, on February 9, 1692, he had purchased a tract of land in the East Divisionand two other small parcels by the waterside, all from Guillaume Le Conteand wife, representing the estate of the deceased Jacques Lasty. Note: Note: He received Letters of Denization on February 6, 1696, with his threesons, Ambroise, Daniel and Jacques Sicard, and his son-in-law, GuillaumeLandrin. He signed the oath of allegiance in New Rochelle, pursuant tothe order of January, 1698. His name appears in the 1698 census of New Rochelle, as aged Sixty-sevenyears, without a wife, and living in the family of his son, DanielSicard. He was elected Collector in 1700. He made his will on March 28,1701, which was recorded in the Town Record book on May 21, 1701. It was not proved, and appears to be in theform of a family contract. There is evidence that he may have been livingas late as 1712. The name has been corrupted to Secor, Seacor, Secord andSeacord. Source: "Biographical Sketches and Index of the Huguenot Settlers of New Rochelle1687-1776" Morgan H. Seacord, The Huguenot and Historical Association ofNew Rochelle, New Rochelle, NY, 1941. Note: Note: The settlers of New Rochelle, in Westchester County, New York, were, asit might be presumed, for the most part Rochellese. The leading member ofthe settlement was Alexandre Allaire, of whom mention has already beenmade. With him were associated Louis Bonneau, Jean Bouteiller, Jacues Flandreau, Daniel Gombaud, JeanHastier, Bartholomew and Issac Mercier, Caniel Rayneau, Ambroise Sicard,Andre and Peter Thauvet, Jacob Theroulde. . . Ambroise Sicard was arefugee from La Rochelle--(History of Westchester County, etc., II., 758), who came to America with histhree sons, Ambroise, Daniel and Jacques. The Records of the FrenchChurch in New York begin with the entry of the baptism of Madelaine, daughter of Ambroise Sicard [junior] and Jeanne Perron, his wife, November 24, 1688. The Sicards settled in NewRochelle as early as the year 1692. Source: "The Huguenot Emigration ToAmerica" Charles W. Baird, vol I., page 291-292. Note: Note: Ambroise is believed to be buried in the Old Huguenot Burying Ground inNew Rochelle, New York, which is located on the west side of DivisionStreet between the New York, New Haven and Hartford Tracks and UnionAvenue. "This plot is part of the farm that was laid out originally for Louis Bongrand, one of the earlyHuguenot settlers of the Town. Sometime between his purchase of it, OnMay 21, 1690 and June 22, 1693 (when he sold the property) he gave thisplot of forty paces square "to the Inhabitants of New Rochelle aforesaid for a Churchyard to bury theirdead." The land southeast of this plot was subsequentlyacquired by theEnglish Church, now Trinity Episcopal Church, as a glebe, and the twoparcels were ultimately combined so that the original boundary lines became obliterated and the burials ofthe Church Corporation extended from the old plot over and into the newtract." Note: Note: No markings remain of those pioneers who were buried there in the earlyyears. Most of the above information can be accessed at the New RochellePublic Library and much more, too detailed to mention here. Be carefulwith some of the information that some people have put on the various sites on the Internet as it isincorrect. The Maps for New Rochelle, New York, have been put on theWestchester, New York, GenWeb site, under Miscellaneous and also under"What's New". There is also a picture of Ambroise Sicard's house, Then and Now. as well as a two pageMap showing where Ambroise Sicard Senior lived with the two sectionsjoining up sideways at the Boston Road. Note: Note: The Huguenot monument in that New Rochelle lists the Sicards as some ofthe original settlers. There is also a listing in the 1710 Census for theTowne Of New Rochelle, New York on XBr 9th, 1710 but for a James Sycar, age 75, living with his son Daniel Sycar Sr. and his family.
