He graduated from Ironwood High School in 1940 and attended Gogebic Junior College. Enlisted in U.S. Army Air Force, June 23, 1942 and was a TSgt. Engineer-gunner (B-17) for 27 combat missions. He received a Distinguished Flying Cross; Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters; European Theater Ribbon; 4 battle stars. B-29 remote control gunner instructor Jan 1945 to Sept 1945. Discharged Sept 15, 1945. He attended the University of Wisconsin, majoring in Metallurgical Engineering. Member Phi Eta Sigma, honorary fraternity, Sophomore High Honors School of Engineering.
