MR. ALLAN BALLARD

After a long and trying illness, the death occurred at his home in Church Street last night of Mr. Allan Ballard, a member of an old district fam-ily and a prominent figure in the farming and grazing industries over a great many years.

The funeral, arrangements for which were in the hands of Messrs. R. T. Lightfoot and Co., took place to the Methodist portion of the local cemetery this afternoon.

An Appreciation "Meandering Mike" writes : "By the death of Mr. Allan Ballard Glen Innes district has lost a man who played a highly helpful part in its development during the past 30 years, or more. Possessed of a keen, penetrative mind, with sound reasoning powers, allied to a gift of lucid expression, he was a man of unusual energy and perseverance. Mr. Ballard, with out flourish of trumpets or obtrusion of personality, ever evinced a most helpful interest in the district affairs, particularly as they affected the interests of men on the land, of whom he, of course, was a stalwart supporter, having been intimately associated with agricultural pursuits from boy-hood days. For many years he re-sided at Red Range— where the family name is held In the highest regard and he was ever In the forefront of any legitimate movement calculated to enhance the standing and advance the interests of that progressive community. He served with credit on many public bodies, much of his well-directed zeal being devoted to the affairs of the Pastures Protection Board and the P. and A. Society in bygone years. He served at various periods on show committees, and ever evinced his practical interest and support per medium of exhibits in the agricultural and other sections at show time. An ardent devotee of cricket, he was one of the gold old type, who oftimes played the game at great inconvenience, and perhaps disadvantage, to themselves. He played regularly with the old Linwood and Red Range teams, upon which he at all times exerted beneficial influence. "Without claiming to be a brilliant batsman, he was the essence of reliability and in all other phases of the game showed, by his sportsmanlike attributes, that he had the best interests of cricket at heart.

The late Mr. Ballard proved a stalwart where the best interests of the man on the land were concerned. In earlier days the Farmers and Settlers' Association (with several district branches) was a truly powerful factor in local affairs; and as a member of this body, deceased rendered truly yeoman service. His was a formidable personality at the debating table, his lucidity of utterance ever denoting the highly intelligent trend of thought he brought to bear on any subject which came up for discussion. He possessed undoubtedly incisive gifts of reasoning. A man who rendered the town and district eminently useful service in many directions, Mr. Ballard's good record will undoubtedly evoke, appreciative reference from all who knew him as one of sterling - Character— a staunch friend, and a sound citizen. Vale; Allan Ballard
