Alfred Binstead was baptised on 19th January 1851 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Harriet Binstead, formerly Grant, and her husband William Binstead, a fisherman. Alfred appears in the 1851, 1861 and 1871 censuses living with his parents at Mill in Sidlesham (although the 1871 census does not specify the address it is clear from the sequence of the neighbours that it is the same house as ten years earlier). In 1871 Alfred was working as a fisherman. He has yet to be researched after 1871.
