Capt. Alex. McDonald, Master of the Elgin L. Lewis during the past season, died on Monday of last week, after a very brief illness of inflammation of the bowels. Captain McDonald was born at Fenelon Falls [Victoria Co.], whither his father had gone from Mara, of which township his grandparents were among the first settlers.
When Alexander was about a year and a half old, his parents returned to Mara, and there he had resided on the old homestead near Uptergrove for the remainder of his life. In addition to farming, he had for many years been connected with steamboating on Lake Simcoe and Couchiching, and at various times commanded the tugs Victoria and Isabella and the passenger steamers Enterprise and Elgin L. Lewis. He leaves a widow, whose maiden name was Mary Ann McInnes, and a family of eight, of whom all but two married daughters Mrs. H. Bresso, and Mrs. E. Warner, of Orillia, are at home. The funeral, which took place at Uptergrove, was largely attended, and was conducted by the Rev. J. H. White. pastor of the Presbyterian church
