Alanson K. Gunn and Anna moved from Ashtabula County, OH, to Eaton County, MI, in about 1855. Lived next to Noble (father) and Esther (mother) in Eaton County (Chester Twp.) when the 1860 census was taken, pg 908 (Alanson). Seth seems also to be there. [Mildred Hanson -- great grandaughter]

Alanson was living in Chester, Michigan at the time he enlisted as a Private on 15 August 1862 in the town of Charlotte, Michigan He was in Company F of the Michigan 6th Infantry. Source: Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers 1861-65.

He died of typhoid in Baton Rouge as a Civil War soldier. This was only nine days after his wife died. The children were placed under the guardianship of Noble and Esther until about 1873 when Joshua and Orrin "Little Joe" were placed under the guardianship of their Uncle Seth. Noble would then have been about 70 years old. The children received a pension.
