In the 1850 census, Adam 'Mihl' is a gardener living in Brooklyn, New York. He is age 34 from Germany, and his wife Mary is 36 from Germany. Their children are Jacob, 6; Mary E., 4; Phillip, 2; and Catherine, 2/12 - all born in New York. Also living with them is Jacob 'Fetting', 28 year old laborer from Germany. {9th ward Brooklyn, p. 63}

 In the 1860 census for Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, Adam 'Muhl' is a milkman, age 45 from Hesse Darmstadt, with $3400 real estate and $1000 personal.  His wife Anna M. is 45, also from Hesse Darmstadt. The children are Jacob 15; Elizab. 13; Philipp 11; Cath. 9; and John, 7 -- all born in New York. {9th ward, p.713, dwelling 967, household 1405}
 In the 1870 census for Brooklyn, 21st ward, Kings Co., New York, Adam is a milkman, 53, from Germany, with $50,000 in real estate and $3500 personal.  Wife Mary is 56, also from Germany, 'keeping house'.  Living with them are Phillip, 20, milkman; Kate, 18; and John, 17, 'drives milk wagon'.  {21st Ward, Brooklyn, p. 338} I have not found son Jacob in the 1870 census.
 In the 1878 and in the 1879 Directory for Brooklyn, there are listings for Adam Mehl, 'milk', at 801 Greene Av. and for Phillip Mehl 'milk' at the same address. In the 1879-80 Directory, a Jacob Mehl is listed as 'driver' at 536 Herkimer and there is a John Mehl 'cutter' at 69 Montrose, and a John Mehl 'lab' at 137 Montrose. {Brooklyn Directories, Brooklyn Genealogy, <http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Directory/>}
 There is a notice in the Brooklyn Eagle in 18 Sept 1871, that "I hereby give notice to all persons trusting my son John W. Mehl that they do it on their own responsibility. Adam Mehl."
 In 1882 there is a notice that "Counsellor Bradbury C. Chetwood was appointed guardian ad litem to Joseph Duryea, Florence Duryea, and John W. Mehl Jr., infant, who are with others defendants in a suit brought by John W. Mehl Sr. against John H. 'Hilliku' and Henry C. Fortmeyer as executors of the last will and testament of Adam Mehl.
