↑ Both Abraham and his father were known as Deacon Abraham Merrill and both had a wife named Abigail. Besides their age, a distinguishing feature was that the father was of Newbury where he d. 1722, while the son moved to Amesbury where he d. 1744.

Vital Records of Newbury, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849, p. 1:323: "Mirril, ---, ch. Abram [Abraham. S. dup.], Sept. 28 [Sept. 20, 1672, S. dup.]". There is no explicit birth record for Abraham found there. Source:Cutter, William Richard. Genealogical and Personal Memoirs Relating to the Families of Boston and Eastern Massachusetts, p. 2:947, says that Abraham was the "eldest son", and estimates his birth as "about 1662" as a result. He does not say how he knows this, though one might suspect it is based on the father's probate files?
