He served as a private under Capt. Silas Brown from 4 Mar to 2 Dec 1760 in the campaign for the total reduction of Canada. In his enlistment, 26 Feb 1760, he was described as a son of Amos Gates and 18 years of age. In another record he is erroneously called a son of Samuel Gales. He also served in the American Revolution.
