Shortly after his birth, his family migrated to Jones Co, Georgia then to Conecuh Co, Alabama around 1819 and finally settled in Pike Co, Alabama by 1830. He married Elizabeth in 1831 in Pike Co and came to Texas in 1835, where the majority of their descendants remain today.

In December 1835 Abner received a land grant in Robertson's Colony in present-day Burnet County. Despite this, they chose to first settle near Webberville in eastern Travis County. For his July-Oct 1836 service in the Texas Army, he also received 320 acres in Fannin County and a pension. In 1842 the family moved to present-day Panola County with Elizabeth's father. In 1854 they moved again, to their parcel of land in Burnet County. In 1860 they settled for the final time in Bastrop County, in Campbell Hill (now known as the Coon Neck community).
