↑ No record of Philip's marriages have been found. The Find A Grave cited, without explanation, gives Abigail a maiden name of Parker and a birth in Groton 31 Jan 1731. There is no Abigail Parker born in Groton that date and the Abigail Parker born 19 Jan 1731/32 to Obadiah Parker and Hannah Stevens can be shown to be married to Jonathan Messer of Lunenburg from 1759 at least through 1785 (see her page), which is only five years prior to the death of Philip Monroe, making it unlikely she was ever his wife, and absolutely certain she was not the mother of any of his children. History of the Town of Lexington, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, from Its First Settlement to 1868, Vol. 2, p. 455, says he had a wife Mary, had 6 children then apparently moved to Shrewsbury where 3 more were baptized, all by 1764. Source:Ward, Andrew Henshaw. History of the Town of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, p. 374, notes the three baptisms, saying their births are not on record, nor the name of their mother.
