From Robin Taylor on COOLEY-L 23 Apr 2005: The surname Bagg is frequently spelled Bagge in England, where if flourished in Norfolkshire and Plymouth since Robert La Bagge of Caen in Normandy, who came with The Conqueror, according to the article on the family by Lyman Hotchkiss Bagg. The name in Old English signified a badge. The earliest of the name in America of whom any record is found is John Bagg, who m. Dec. 24, 1657, Springfield, Hannah Burt, who was b. in Springfield Apr. 28, 1641, d. there Aug. 1, 1680, after bearing 10 children. John Bagg d. Sept. 5, 1683, Springfield, and was presumable between 45 and 50 years old at the time of his death.
