Facts and Events
[edit] BiographyAbigail was enumerated in the NY State Census of 1855 as the head of household containing her son Joseph N. Bassett, and built of plank. Both she and Joseph had been residents of the town for 17 years; she was born in Saratoga and he in Erie County. She was listed as 50 years old and owning real estate at a value of $50. Her personal estate was recorded as approximately $1,148. She had 9 improved and 23 unimproved acres of land; the cash values of her farm, stock, and tools were $960, $76 and [$112?] respectively. Her 3 1/2 acres of meadow produced four tons of hay and two bushels of grass. She sowed one acre of spring wheat for three bushels and three acres of winter wheat for 20 bushels; one acre of buckwheat for nine bushels, a half acre of corn for 30 bushels, and one acre of potatoes for 30 bushels. Her hives produced 25 pounds of honey and four pounds of wax. Her three milk cows produced 225 pounds of butter. The value of her sold poultry was $4, and the value of eggs sold was $6. She made 15 pairs of socks for $5.[8] In 1863, Abigial received $9.50 from a county fund for sheep damage due to dogs, dating back to 1857.[7] In 1865 at age 27, her son Joseph was still living with her, though he would be married and living in Tennessee within 5 years, and he was working as a sawyer. She also had three boarders in her house: James M. and Sarah C. Lawton, and their eight month old son, Geo. N. Lawton. Mr. Lawton was a seaman born in Massachusetts, and his wife Sarah had been born in England. Both (and only) Abigail and Sarah were listed as owners of land. The 1870 census put her as the only person living in her household, with a real estate value of $2000. [edit] Footnotes
